„After a first analysis, we’ll cut 1,000 jobs, some of which are vacant, by the end of the year,” Borbely said, adding job cuts are meant to render the institution’s activity more efficient and they’re not being cut for the sake of cutting.

He said public sector staff must be reduced, or wage issues will linger.

Romania has pledged to cut public salaries by 25% and reduce pensions and other social aids by 15% in an effort to keep the budget deficit in check, in order for the International Monetary Fund and other international institutions to disburse further installments of a EUR20 billion IMF-led rescue loan. The Government has also vowed to sack 70,000 public workers this year.
