Romanian Teachers’ Strike Must Not Affect Pupils – President

Romanian President Traian Basescu said on Thursday, responding to a comment by education union leader Razvan Bobulescu, that he cares about the teachers’ strike and “first of all about the pupils who are mocked [through the strike] without being guilty.”

Basescu added that the blame is on the parties which promised to raise the teachers’ salaries, he himself taking part of the blame.

“The children must not be affected. My statement was: ‘I cannot stop you, it is your choice, you are free to [go on strike], but I cannot help appeal to your responsibility to the children’,” Basescu said.

Razvan Bobulescu, the leader of the “Alma Mater” union of teachers, said after a meeting with the President, that Basescu told union members they can do what they wish with regard to the protest. Bobulescu added that the union is going ahead with the strike.
