Maracine said the forecast issued by the National Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology indicates that the drought will hit southern and southeastern Romania early June. The areas contain 98% or irrigation installations.
"These terrains will be the first ones struck by the drought and, if the situation goes on for several years in a row, we will have a desert on our hands," Maracine said.
He added the drought would extend to the sub-Carpathians and to the north, as well as in part of the Banat area.
