Romanian Carmaker Dacia To Make Small Class Cars

Romanian carmaker Automobile Dacia, the local unit of France’s Renault, is ready to start making small class cars, considering the demand for such vehicles, Dacia vice-president Constantin Stroe said Thursday.

„We have some surprises in store with the renewal of the Logan range,” Stroe said.

He added Dacia exported 22,000 in January this year.

Regarding Dacia’s first SUV, Dacia Duster, Stroe said the model has been in the making in the Romanian plant for about four months now and may reach an estimated 20% market share of this year’s production.

He added Dacia so far made over 1,000 Duster cars.

„Duster will be very popular on the Romanian market, especially among women,” the automaker’s vice-president said.

The carmaker’s sales manager, Fabrice Cambolive, told a news conference recently that Dacia plans to design and produce two new models but didn’t give any details.

Besides the Duster, Dacia currently produces six car models: Logan Berlina (sedan), Logan MCV, Logan Van, Logan Pick-up, Dacia Sandero and Dacia Sandero Stepway.

Dacia sold 311,282 cars last year, 20.5% more than in 2008, but its sales in Romania declined more than 50%, to 41,862 cars.

Stroe said the carmaker’s sales are expected to decline 7.8% in 2010.
