Anti-Hungarian Atmosphere In Romania Delays Adoption Of Bill On National Minorities – Party Leader
Kelemen Hunor, leader of the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania – part of the Romanian ruling coalition - said Saturday the statute of national minorities won’t be adopted by June 30 considering the “current anti-Hungarian atmosphere.”

According to Kelemen, some of the bill's articles have been debated by the Parliament, but the adoption deadline won't be observed.
"Considering the current anti-Hungarian atmosphere, when neither the opposition nor the Government is willing to rethink their standpoint, I doubt the bill on national minorities will be adopted by June 30," he said.
"I think the new law must create an institutional frame for cultural autonomy," said Kelemen, adding that the party will try to initiate new debates so the bill on national minorities will consider this aspect.
Addressing the issue regarding the country's administrative reorganization, Kelemen said his party does not want to give rise to a political crisis and would rather "freeze" the problem.
He added that, should ruling coalition partners continue to support the plan to reorganize the country into eight counties plus Harghita and Covasna, which the Union disagrees with, the problem must be frozen and new discussions must be initiated.
He pointed out that the Union will not agree with a reorganization plan that divides the Hungarian community in Romania. Kelemen said it is an illusion to believe that, by leaving the ruling coalition, the Union can do more for the community.
