Dacian Ciolos arrived at the Presidency headquarters in Cotroceni Palace around 2.15 p.m. local time, shortly after Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso announced the structure of the new Cabinet.
Romanian President Traian Basescu said Ciolos’ designation is a triumph of Romanian diplomacy.
Ciolos said his designation is proof that even a Romanian candidate can be trusted with a field as important as agriculture. He added that this is an opportunity to bring his professional contribution „to this European construct” which Romania joined in 2007.
Barroso said he is very pleased with Ciolos’ appointment, adding that Ciolos was by far the most competent of those proposed for the position, due to his long experience and modern outlook on agriculture and rural development.
European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso announced Friday in Brussels the list of designated commissioners, with Dacian Ciolos taking up the agriculture and rural development portfolio on behalf of Romania.
