Speaking at a large bikers gathering in southeast seaside resort of Mamaia, Nemirschi said the second stage of the government car scrap program introduces two major changes, namely the possibility to replace and buy light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tons and unrestricted car purchases for individuals.

“These two modifications will be possible after I have introduced in the government next Wednesday an emergency ordinance on the matter and, I suspect that sometime after 10-15 June, the second stage will be in place, with the program including unrestricted number of cars and light vehicles. Our target is to replace 60,000 jalopies on the market this year, regardless of their make and of the owners of the new ones,” Nemirschi said.

As to the first stage of the program, Nemirschi said it accomplished its goal and, in fact, it helped the automotive industry, which saw an overall drop on the year of some 50% in the first four months.

He said 11,500 out of 20,000 cars allocated were sold in the first stage of the car renewal program.

Companies might be allowed to participate in the program as well, but only in the second stage, which will be launched September 1, Nemirschi added.
