The overall turnover of the 34 Romanian companies in the top grew by 28% on the year to RON39 billion.
„Romania ranks fifth in the region based on the level of representation in Top 500 Central Europe. Compared to 2007, when Deloitte launched this project regionally, the number of Romanian companies with turnovers exceeding EUR1 billion has grown from 9 to 14. Moreover, this year’s top includes two Romanian-owned companies. Such results prove that the local business environment is maturing and beginning to exploit its potential,” said George Mucibabici, Chairman Deloitte Romania.
In 2008, the 30 Romanian companies included in Deloitte’s Top 500 CE were either state-run companies or they had foreign shareholders.
„Of course, financial results in 2009 will reflect the impact of the global economic crisis that has been affecting the region since last quarter of 2008. However, we expect a significant presence for Romania in next year’s Top as well, considering that it is the second largest market in the region,” Mucibabici mentioned.
Poland is still the leader of Deloitte Top 500 in Central Europe, with 188 companies in 2009 (compared to 176, in 2008), followed by the Czech Republic (69, versus 70 last year) and Hungary (with an unchanged number of 60).

The best-rank Romanian firm is Petrom (SNP.RO), the country’s largest oil company, with a 16th spot, followed on 39th by rival peer Rompetrol.
French Renault’s local unit Automobile Dacia (77), steel maker ArcelorMittal (89) and retail store chain Metro (100) also made it to the top 100.
Broken down by industries, four Romanian banks rank among the largest 50 central European institutions. Banca Comerciala Romana, or BCR, ranks 10th, followed by BRD-Groupe Societe Generale (14), Volksbank (46) and UniCredit (50).
In the insurance category, Romania’s Allianz-Ţiriac Asigurari ranks 23rd in the top 50, followed by Omniasig (27), Asirom (39), ING Asigurari de Viata (41), Astra-Uniqa(42) and Asiban (45).
Launched in 2007, Deloitte Top 500 Central Europe is an annual top of companies in the region, based on revenues, profit, number of employees and market capitalization.
