Over 80% of family doctors in Romania have said they won’t sign frame agreement with health insurance houses in April, which means patients will no longer benefit from free or compensated drugs or referrals to specialized doctors.

„Unfortunately, it has become a tradition for family doctors to fight every spring to protects their practices and patients and bring some sense of order in an otherwise chaotic public healthcare system,” said Wednesday Doina Mihaila, head of the national federation of family physicians FNPMF.

She said 81% of family doctors have already said they will not sign new frame-agreements on April 1.

Doctors have called on the Bucharest Court of Appeals to suspend an order of the Health Ministry and the National Health Insurance House that obliges family doctors to buy card readers and 3G broadband internet systems.

Mihaila said such systems should be bought by the National Health Insurance House, which should ensure the functioning of the system.
