Romania’s Leftist Social Democrats Secure Most Mayor Positions Countrywide

Romania’s leftist opposition Social Democratic Party secured 1,138 most mayor positions countrywide in local elections Jun 1 and Jun 15, while democrat liberals gained 908 positions and liberals gained 706, according to final results released Thursday by the Central Electoral Office.

Social democrats secured 35.79% of the 3,179 mayor mandates attributed so far, democrat liberals – 28.56%, and liberals – 22.20%.

Data presented Thursday by the Central Electoral Office do not include Arcani commune in Gorj county and Poeni commune in Teleorman county, southern Romania, where no candidate secured a majority of votes, and elections are to be held again on Jun 29. Also on Jun 29, Stefanestii de Jos commune in Ilfov county, near Bucharest, and Sascut, Bacau county, eastern Romania, will hold the second round of local elections, after the electoral office cancelled the first round on Jun 1.

The total number of mandates to be attributed in local elections is 3,181.
