However, the company intends to hire 200 engineers and technicians as well.
“The workforce reorganization process will continue, but we will make sure no one of those who wish to work with us will be fired. The voluntary layoffs scheme is available this year as well. Apart from those who will be let go, we will hire a number of people, mostly engineers and technicians. We are hoping the number of employees will be a little over 13,000 by the end of the year. We will hire some 200 people this year,” ArcelorMittal Galaţi CEO Augustine Kochuparampil said in a press conference.
The company currently employs around 13,650 people.
The steel maker’s reorganization program includes doubling production to 8 million tons of steel per year from 4.4 million tons in 2007.
“The ideal number of employees for an 8 million-ton production would be most likely between 10,000 and 11,000 people,” Kochuparampil mentioned.
ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel group, employs 320,000 people in more than 60 countries worldwide and has production units in 27 countries.
The steel group owns in Romania four steel plants, namely Mittal Steel Roman, Mittal Steel Hunedoara, Mittal Steel Galati and Mittal Steel Iasi, and harbor operator Romportmet Galati.
