Romania To Have Nearly Optimal Weather This Year

The year 2009 will be “nearly optimal from the point of view of weather”, with precipitation close to multiannual average values, but drought may affect certain parts of Romania in summer.

Romania’s Meteorological Authority head Ion Sandu presented a weather forecast for the next six months Monday, on the international day of meteorology.

Sandu said the country won’t see major flooding with significant consequences this year and rain is expected to be close to average multiannual values, and even lower in some areas of Romania, which might trigger drought.

For April, weather experts forecast an average quantity of rain of 40-60 liters per square meter, which falls under normal levels.

"That doesn’t mean small rivers won’t overflow in areas with more rain, but we can’t predict that so much in advance,” Sandu said.

May and June won’t bring heavy rain either, Sandu said, contradicting recent media reports that low temperatures expected in May could ruin fruit trees. "No such thing,” Sandu said.

He added July and August will see little rain, but hopes this forecast doesn’t come true.

"I hope this forecast doesn’t confirm. In July and August, temperatures are slightly below average and for certain areas, that means draught,” Sandu said.

He also said a six-month forecast isn’t very exact, as not even the biggest weather institutes in the world can’t provide detailed forecast for more than ten days.

Sandu added 2009 is expected to be really good for wheat crops, but not as good for corn.
