Twelve Dead In Powerful Blasts At W Romania Mine

Eight miners died and other eight were severely injured in the first blast at around 15:00, while other four miners, who were part of the rescue teams, died in second blast at 18:40.
 
The eight miners injured in the first blast were rushed to Petrosani emergency hospital with severe burns and traumas. Six of them were operated on and subsequently committed to the intensive care unit, hospital manager Alexandrina Remescu said Saturday.
 
Daniel Surulescu, manager of the national pitcoal company, said the blast was located at a depth of 950 meters and was caused by an accumulation of gas.
 
Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu required that a coordinating group be set up and immediately sent to Petrila mine to back rescue operations. The group is led by Viorel Palasca, secretary of state with the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
 
Labor minister Mariana Campeanu said she will reach Petrila Sunday morning, adding she will find ways to help the families of the miners involved in the tragic accident.
 
This is the ninth tragic accident at Petrila mine over the past twenty years.
