Around 70,000 Romanians Spent Easter Holiday In The Country

Their main destinations were the mountain resorts in Valea Prahovei and Bran-Moeciu (over 35,000 people), the Black Sea (over 10,000, with more than 20,000 people attending events on the seaside) and the northern region of Bukovina (8,000 tourists), an ANAT statement said.

Romanian tourists also turned to rural pension houses (Maramures, the Apuseni Mountains, Marginimea Sibiului), mountain resorts (Borsa, Arieseni, Vatra Dornei, Campulung Moldovenesc) and balneary resorts (Baile Felix, Covasna, Calimanesti-Caciulata).

The growth of internal tourism was due to the promotion of the seaside and Bukovina, ANAT said.

In early April, ANAT spokesman Traian Badulescu told MEDIAFAX that the number of tourists who purchased Easter holiday packages is below the one recorded during the Easter holiday of 2008, when the number of free days was higher, as Easter was closer in the calendar to May 1.

Around 25,000 Romanians chose to spend their Easter holiday abroad, according to ANAT estimates. Some 70% chose Greece and Bulgaria. A few thousand opted for city-breaks in large European cities, such as Vienna, Athens, Budapest, Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Rome, Istanbul and London.

According to ANAT, the average price for a tourism package was 300 lei (EUR1=RON4.2430) for internal tourism and EUR250 for foreign destinations.

“Based on the signals we have been receiving, we believe May 1 will see tourist traffic that will exceed expectations. Internally, the most sought-after destination will be the seaside (we expect over 20,000 people), while externally, Greece (Paralia, Halkidiki, Creta), Turkey (Antalya), Bulgaria (the seaside) and Tunisia, will be the most popular", ANAT said.
