Authorized Protest Held In W Romanian City Timisoara Against Car tax

More than one hundred citizens in western Romanian city Timisoara gathered, Sunday morning, in front of the Timis county prefecture, to attend an organized and authorized rally of protest against the tripling of the car tax, a regulation that will come into force Monday.

The protestors attended an unauthorized rally Saturday, blocking traffic, and later asked authorities to authorize a second protest, the one organized Sunday.

Timis county prefect Ovidiu Draganescu and Timis Traffic Police chief Florin Bolbos arrived on the scene.

"I hope today (Sunday) we will no longer have the problems we had yesterday, the protest was authorized, it is the option of the people to hold protests, but given the fact they received authorization for this rally I hope traffic will no longer be blocked and I understood they will be more civilized," Draganescu said.

Bolbos said in his turn that the rally will no longer block traffic.

"The protesters are accompanied throughout their march by police and gendarmerie. We will not have the problems we’ve had yesterday," Bolbos said.

The protest was authorized between 0900 and 1200 GMT.
