In 2009, over 20,000 construction companies entered insolvency, suspended operations or went bankrupt, ARACO’s head Laurentiu Plosceanu told a news conference Tuesday.

He said the number of employees in the construction sector will drop to 300,000 at the end of the first half, down by 20% from a year before, due to delays in new projects, following the late adoption of the 2010 budget.

The constructions market was down 17% in 2009, at EUR12.2 billion.

ARACO forecasts the constructions market may stagnate in 2010 in best case scenario, but the realistic scenario points to a 8%-9% drop.
