Thus, Ciobanu was appointed manager of Otopeni airport, while George Mihalcea was appointed manager of Baneasa airport.
"I’ve decided to replace the managers of airports Baneasa and Otopeni not because I have any reproaches to make, but because I generally replace good managers with better ones,” Berceanu said.
The minister added the new managers will have to fix problems cab drivers have in the airport areas, increase the quality of services and complete the merger of the two airports.
Berceanu also said the ministry will initially invest EUR300 million, from the Japanese Investment Bank, in a subway line to the Otopeni airport and the rest of the money for the project, which will cost a total EUR1 billion, will be covered by other bank loans.
Sorinel Ciobanu, the new manager of Otopeni airport, was formerly general manager of the Baneasa airport and was indicted last year by anticorruption prosecutors, alongside five other people. Ciobanu is accused of having approved an exchange of lands between the airport and an individual, causing the airport a loss of over EUR4 million.
