On Thursday, the national Interpol office informed the Justice Ministry that Necolaiciuc was arrested on June 17, 2009 by the U.S. Marshals Service and the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Office.
Necolaiciuc is internationally wanted since October 26, 2006, when police lost track of him, while anticorruption prosecutors linked him to 25 cases.
According to the Romanian Police, Mihai Necolaiciuc was included in an all points bulletin on October 26, 2006, after an arrest warrant was issued in his name for economic crimes.
Necolaiciuc is accused of having performed unwarranted investments between 2000-2003, while he was at the head of the National Railroad Company, he purchased products at overestimated prices, causing losses of over 170 million lei (EUR1= RON4.2181).
However, the National Anticorruption Department initiated criminal investigations against him, in March 2006, the case also involving former secretary of state within the Ministry of Transport Traian Panait, both investigated for a fraud of over EUR27 million.
