Basescu said Thursday evening on Realitatea TV, if seven million vote and six million vote in favor of his proposed uninominal system, parliament parties would be called for consultations.
On Sunday, exit polls showed less than 27% of voters cast their vote in the referendum, and 89.2% voted in favor of the majority uninominal voting system in two rounds of elections.
Sunday evening, Basescu said that four million voters of the nearly five million that voted, were in favor of his proposed system. He added that in this case, the referendum law should be carefully reanalyzed, as the poll on Sunday shows the law is not fair.
The president said there is a “hard core” of voters who are interested in Romanian politics, and who has proven on Sunday a firm will to reform the political class. The head of state said those voters will be very frustrated over the legal provisions regarding the validity of the referendum.
He emphasized that 80% of voters of all political parties agreed with the introduction of the majority uninominal voting system, which goes to show, Basescu said, that people want reform, regardless of their political preferences.
