President Traian Basescu Delivers Lofty Speech On Romanian Armed Forces Day
Basescu also said the Romanian Army „has always been devoted to the Romanian people and national interests,” adding it currently serves in Africa, the Balkan region and Afghanistan.
The head of state pointed out the Romanian Army serves not only the Romanian people, but also Europe and NATO, stressing it flights for liberty and people’s rights.
Basescu highlighted the Romanian Army fulfills the country’s political commitments and called on Romanians to respect and honor the national army.
The Romanian Armed Forces Day was initially set for October 2, but in 1959, it was changed to October 25, the day when the Romanian territory was freed, a territory temporarily occupied as a result of the Vienna Dictate, in August 1940. In 1944, the Romanian Army liberated Carei, the last Romanian city under foreign occupation.
