Basescu said he thinks this is one of the most important polls ever held in Romania, because Romanians have the power to say how they want the Parliament to work and to elect their president and this, he said, is „tremendous power.”

About 18 million eligible voters are expected to cast ballots Sunday to elect a new president and say whether they want the country’s Parliament downsized to a single chamber and a maximum 300 lawmakers instead of the current 471. Polls close at GMT1900.

At least half of eligible voters must cast ballots for the referendum to be validated. Voter turnouts at elections in Romania have decreased significantly from over 80% in 1990 to less than 30% in European Parliament elections this summer.
