Romania’s New President Will Secure Majority In Parliament – President Basescu
Basescu said he has no regrets about the political coalition formed between the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) and the Social Democratic Party (PSD). He added that, when this political coalition was formed, he talked to social democrats Mircea Geoana, Ilie Sarbu and Miron Mitrea, who at that time appeared to have control in PSD. Basescu also said he chose at that time not to talk to social democrats Ion Iliescu, Viorel Hrebenciuc or Marian Vanghelie, who, he believes, later gained control over the party.
Furthermore, Basescu said he did not stir up political disputes, stressing things took a turn for the worse after he condemned communist crimes, ordered two million Securitate (the former communist secret police) files be declassified, criticized the government for the messy situation caused by the floods in 2006 and after he urged the reformation of the political class.
The head of state also said he will never get along with politicians or owners of media groups like Dinu Patriciu and Sorin Ovidiu Vantu.
