One of the newborns is in critical condition, with extended burns and severe respiratory problems, and dependent on mechanical ventilation, says a press release by the city’s „Grigore Alexandrescu” Hospital.

The other five babies are stable and their wounds are healing. They have all been born prematurely and are receiving inter-disciplinary, local and general care in the hospital’s newborn intensive care unit.

Five newborn babies died and six were severely injured in an explosion which took place on August 16 in the intensive care unit of the Giulesti maternity hospital. Investigators are probing three people – Florentina Cirstea, the medical assistant in charge of the unit, Vasile Dima, head of the hospital’s technical department, and Adrian Toma, head of the neonatology unit.
