The campaign, which started on Oct 31 at midnight, lasts 30 days and ceases 24 hours before the vote according to the law. The law bans the continuation of political propaganda after the end of the campaign and stipulates fines of 1,000 to 2,500 lei (EUR1=RON3.7794) for breaches.
The law also stipulates that all election materials are to be removed from polling stations after the end of the campaign, and bans the presentation of opinion polls 48 hours before the vote.
Polls open Sunday morning at GMT 0500 and Romania’s approximately 18 million citizens with the right to vote will elect their lawmakers, through direct vote. This is the first round of general elections Romania holds under the uninominal system, replacing the old system where ballots were cast for an entire list of candidates selected by each political party.
Romania will have 43 electoral divisions, one for each of its 41 counties, one for capital city Bucharest and one for Romanians residing abroad.
They country has 315 uninominal constituencies for the Chamber of Deputies and 137 constituencies for Senate. The 315 deputy mandates may be supplemented by a maximum 18, reserved under the law for organizations of citizens representing national minorities represented in the Council of National Minorities.
Voters will have 18,104 polling stations available, of which 221 will be open abroad.
Polling stations close Sunday evening at GMT 1900.
