Croitoru, 52, will replace Emil Boc, whose Cabinet lost a no-confidence vote in parliament Tuesday.

Croitoru worked with the central bank for 11 years. He currently serves as adviser on monetary policy issues to Governor Mugur Isarescu.

Between September 2003 and July 2007, Croitoru worked as first advisor to IMF’s executive director for Armenia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Georgia, Israel, the Netherlands, Macedonia, Moldova, Romania and Ukraine.

Basescu said Romania needs a prime minister with economic experience, in connection with the banks and the international financial institutions.

Speaking in a press conference immediately after his nomination, Croitoru said Romania must carry on the reforms undertook with the International Monetary Fund and the European Union, particularly in the public wage, education and pension systems.
