Checkups following six complaints established that damages exceed 1 million lei (EUR1=RON4.2404) and that EUR70,000 is the largest sum withdrawn illegally from a bank account.

Ionel Spataru, deputy head of the Commissariat for Consumer Protection in Brasov, said inspectors with the Commissariat and bank representatives set off checkups and investigations in the case. Spataru added that eleven notifications have been filed so far by clients claiming money from their bank accounts has been withdrawn illegally and stressed complaints keep coming in.

The local police inspectorate in Brasov on Wednesday said police officers have identified five suspects, among whom, a top management employee, three front desk operators and a cashier, all probed for computer forgery and cyber fraud.

The bank in question, Credit Europe Bank, said in a press release Wednesday that, on July 30, it set off an inquiry into the complaints filed by several clients, who claimed the money in their bank accounts had been withdrawn illegally and the bank notified prosecutors on August 5.
