Romanian President Promulgates New Labor Code

On March 8, the Government sought lawmakers’ confidence vote to pass new labor laws into legislation and survived a motion of no-confidence filed by the opposition, which failed to acquire the necessary votes.

Several lawmakers of the Social Democratic and Liberal parties contested the Labor Code at the Constitutional Court. The MPs criticized the adoption procedure for the code and said the new law breaches constitutional rights to work, take vacations and go on strike.

On March 23, the Constitutional Court ruled the country’s new Labor Code is constitutional and rejected claims raised by the opposition.
