Romania Ranks 3rd In EU By May Retail Trading Growth

Romania ranks third in the European Union by retail trading growth, with a 6.8% increase during May 2007- May 2008, according to a report published on Thursday by the Statistical Office of the European Communities, Eurostat.

The highest increases were observed in the United Kingdom, of 7.2%, followed by Lithuania with 7.0%, while the largest decreases were reported in Estonia, Spain and Latvia, of 5.1% each.

Compared to April, Romania posted a decrease of 6.3% in May, as did Lithuania, while the highest increases were observed in Luxembourg, which was up 4.6% on the month, the United Kingdom, up 2.2%, and Austria, up 1.6%. The volume of retail trade in the euro area grew by 1.2% on the month, and 0.2% on the year.

Retail trade of food, drinks and tobacco fell by 1.4% on the year in the European Union, while the euro area saw a 0.1% decrease on the year. On the month, retail trade saw a 0.8% increase in the EU and a 0.5% increase in the euro area.

The non food sector grew by 3.6% on the year in the European Union, and by 1.1% in the euro area, while on the month, retail trade was up 1.6% in the EU and 1.7% in the euro area.
