„The (monthly) increase is spectacular, the first of this magnitude in the past years,” APIA vice-president Constantin Stroe told MEDIAFAX. „It’s the result of the cash-for-clunkers program and it could also be a sign of market revival.”
On an annual basis however, new car registrations fell 19% in April, albeit at a slower pace compared with the 50% decline posted in March.
According to Interior Ministry data, total new auto registrations in April–including commercial vehicles, trailers and special purpose vehicles–stood at 10,365 units, up 91% from 5,405 units a month earlier.
Compared with April last year, new auto registrations were down 22%, the ministry’s license and car registration division said in a statement.
Dacia, made locally by French Renault’s unit Dacia Automobile, was once again the best-traded brand on the local new cars market with 836 units in April, up 3.17% compared with the same month in the previous year.
Dacia was followed by Skoda with 664 units and Renault with 664 units.
In 2009, new car registrations in Romania fell 59% on the year to 116,012 units.
