Geoana added he hopes the head of the Chamber of Deputies, liberal Bogdan Olteanu, won’t halt debates on the ordinance in the Chamber.
"I have no doubt the Senate will reject the emergency ordinance, and debates in the Chamber will follow,” the social democrat leader said.
Geoana also said social democrat lawmakers will all attend the debates next week, and added the Parliament might have its say on the ordinance around November 15.
On Tuesday, the Romanian government decided to postpone applying the law raising teachers’ wages by 50% until April 1, 2009.
Romanian President Traian Basescu on Friday passed a law increasing teachers’ wages by 50%, despite the government’s warning that the move would jeopardize economic stability. The law had been unanimously approved in the Chamber of Deputies and endorsed by the Constitutional Court.
All other public sector employees except those in education threatened ample protests and demanded similar wage hikes.
