The five were allegedly in possession of EUR1.4 million, which were to be paid to footballers of Universitatea Cluj, had they won the match against CFR Cluj.

"This action is still underway and we cannot say anything yet," anticorruption department spokeswoman Livia Saplacan told MEDIAFAX.

The anticorruption department might issue a press release on the subject Thursday.

Romanian Football Federation rules ban the granting of bonuses to other teams.

CFR Cluj won the Romanian football championship, after it beat Universitatea Cluj 1-0. Had the team lost, the top spot would have belonged to Becali’s Steaua.
