Romania’s Mining Sector To Be Reorganized, 1,600 Miners Sacked – EconMin Designate

Romania’s mining sector will be reorganized and 1,600 persons will be sacked from the state-owned pitcoal mining company CNH, Economy Minister-designate Adriean Videanu said at parliamentary hearing Tuesday, giving guarantees that no mine will be shut down.

Moreover, he hopes the decision on the setup of the two national power holdings might be approved Thursday, if the new government obtains the Parliament’s approval.

Videanu confirmed Tuesday the existence of a reorganization program in the mining sector, that has been discussed with unions and that includes layoffs at CNH.

„Categorically, no mine will be closed down,” Videanu said.

The Parliament’s committees for economic policy, industry, privatization and state asset management on Tuesday endorsed Videanu’s nomination as minister of economy. A final decision is due at a confidence vote in Parliament Wednesday.

Videanu, a democrat liberal, has been economy minister in Boc’s previous Cabinet.
