Romanian Sets Himself Ablaze In Rome Protesting Against Red Tape
Stelian B., aged 41, set himself on fire Thursday evening near the "Altare della Patria" monument (Rome) because Italian authorities would not offer him the identity card and the documents necessary for an invalidity pension.
"I am invalid and nobody would hire me. I want equal rights,” the Romanian said.
As soon as he light himself, rescue crews stepped in and put out the fire, after which he was taken to the hospital with burns on his arms and legs, but in stable condition.
"I am desperate. I did so that people could see my situation, but next time I will jump from a height to die," the Romanian warned.
