Romanian President Welcomes Senate Chairman’s Intention To Leave Supreme Defense Council

Romanian President Traian Basescu said Tuesday he welcomes Senate Chairman Mircea Geoana’s intention to leave the Supreme Defense Council, but considers it at odds with Geoana’s previous wish for the coalition protocol to stipulate his membership in the Council.

Basescu said he cannot judge Geoana’s statement from a constitutional or legal point of view, but considers it entirely at odds with the social democrat leader’s past insistence that the ruling coalition Protocol include a provision whereby the Chairman of the Senate is also the Supreme Defense Council vice-president.

Geoana said Sunday he is withdrawing from the Supreme Defense Council. The social democrat leader accused president Basescu of using the Army’s image for election purposes, referring to the recent visits the head of state made in Romania’s operation theaters in Iraq and Afghanistan.
