The amendments could also affect efficient cooperation between Great Britain and Romania against crimes, the statement noted.

Earlier Thursday, Taubman said Romania’s proposed amendments to the criminal and criminal procedure Codes are worrisome for both the country and friends of the country.

The US ambassador added this is not just his own view, as numerous Romanian and international experts have expressed concern that the proposed amendments, if enacted in law, would represent a real setback in Romania’s efforts to fight many types of serious crime and corruption.

Following a harsh statement towards his remarks made by Romanian Chamber Speaker Bogdan Olteanu, Taubman said he only spoke as a “friend of Romania.”

“I spoke as a friend of Romania, which is one of America’s closest allies.  When I see problems that could affect that close relationship, I will continue to speak out.  I think I made my views clear, and I stand by them.”
