Authorities said two chickens in a household in the small and quite isolated village Plaur had bird flu symptoms and have been culled, together with the rest of the poultry raised in the household.
"No other sick birds were found in the rest of the village and no wild birds have been found dead in the area," sanitary authorities said, adding there is currently no danger of infection with the H5N1 virus.
The village is small, with just 31 households, and is quite isolated. It is located on a branch of the Danube river, close to the border with Ukraine.
Samples from the two chickens will be sent to the Weybridge laboratory in Britain.
About two weeks ago, Romanian authorities confirmed the existence of a highly pathogenic bird flu outbreak at a poultry farm in Letea, Tulcea county. Geza Molnar, adviser to the country's health minister, said at that time 49 dead birds had been found in two households and surveillance and disinfection measures had been taken in the area.
