The value of the taxes varies according to the vehicle’s number of axles, authorized mass, whether it is driven inside the country or internationally, and suspension system.

For instance, the tax levied on a two-axle vehicle weighing 15-18 tons, with pneumatic suspension, driving only internally, shall be increased to 517 lei (EUR1=RON4.2923) in 2011 from RON278. If the vehicle has another type of suspension, the tax will jump to RON1,169 from RON630. If it carries cargo abroad, the tax will be raised to RON517 from RON397, in the case of a vehicle with pneumatic suspension, and to RON1,169 from RON899, if it has another suspension system.

The draft decision provides higher taxes on vehicles with three and four axles. A truck weighing more than 32 tons, using an alternative suspension system and driving abroad will be subject to a tax in the amount of RON2,291.

The act does not make mention of motorcycles, cars, buses or other vehicles lighter than 12 tons.

The Government Decision will transpose a European Directive into Romanian legislation. Its sponsors expect an extra RON42 million to the state budget in 2011, RON49 million in 2012 and RON58 million in 2013.
