Some Pensions May Be Lower Under New Romanian Public Pension System – PM

Every Romanian will receive a pension computed according to their personal contribution to the public system, with no privileges and on the basis of a principle of equality and balance before law, which could leave some pensions lower than they are now, Prime Minister Emil Boc said Wednesday.

Boc said the current legislation benefits certain categories of pensioners to the disadvantage of others. He said some pensioners who enjoy special laws might end up receiving less money.

The prime minister’s adviser on social matters, Mihai Seitan, said on Tuesday that the special pensions will be recomputed through the new pension law, based on beneficiaries’ contribution to the public system.

Seitan said the procedure has already been discussed in the Government, and about 200,000 people who benefit from special laws will have their pensions reconsidered, most of them employed or formerly employed in the Military or Interior Ministry.
