Romanian PM: Number Of New Work Contracts Confirm Economy Out Of Recession

Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc said Thursday that 353,339 new work contracts were signed in May, bringing the total number of employment contracts to above the 2008 level and confirming that the economy has emerged from recession.

According to Boc, 239,247 contracts were for an unlimited period, while 114,092 were for a limited period.

The total number of active employment contracts is now 6,315,381, said the prime minister. He explained that this figure went from 6,230,353 in December 31, 2008 to 5,924,571 in December 2009 and to more than 6.3 million in May 2011.

Most contracts were signed in Bucharest and the counties Constanta, Timis, Cluj, Prahova, Brasov, Iasi, Dolj and Arges. The majority of contracts were signed for employees of the processing industry, retail and wholesale, construction and tourism.

Boc also said authorities ran 11,128 controls and gave fines worth 14,142,000 lei (EUR3.42 million) for undeclared labor.
