Interconnection tariffs to mobile telephony networks belonging to Orange Romania and Vodafone Romania will drop as of next year to EUR0.0503 per minute from EUR0.064 per minute.

According to Selmayr, interconnection tariffs will see a further decrease on the long term, driven by the introduction on the Romanian market of the mobile number portability, which enables mobile phone users to change operator while preserving their phone numbers.

Selmayr said mobile number portability might stimulate operators to reduce differences between tariffs practiced for own network calls and the ones for calls outside the home network.

Head of Romanian IT&C regulator, Liviu Nistoran, said a final decision regarding the last phase of lowering interconnection tariffs for mobile telephony networks will be made by yearend, pending a new analysis of the local mobile telephony market.
