“The expedition aims to promote university mountain climbing, as well as to test the equipment created for climbers and the human body’s reactions to altitude,” said Vasile Cipcigan, head of the Mountain Rescue Service in Cluj county, western Romania.

Not all members need to reach the peak, climber Alin Corha said.

“If only one of us reaches the peak, it will be a great accomplishment. We will take on the north side of the peak, which is less exposed to avalanches,” Corha mentioned.

The climbers will use equipment made in Romania, except for the tents, which are manufactured in France.

The expedition will cost over EUR20,000, covered from sponsors and funds provided by the County Council in Cluj and two local mayoralties in the county.

The first ascent of the Khan Tengri peak was made in 1931 by Mikhail Pogrebetsky’s Ukrainian team from the south, along the west ridge.
