Bucharest Baneasa Airport To Handle Business Traffic, Low-Cost Flights Moved To Otopeni

Romania's Transport Ministry plans to convert Bucharest's Aurel Vlaicu (Baneasa) Airport into one reserved for business flights and move low-cost traffic to the Henri Coanda Airport in the nearby town of Otopeni, meaning higher costs for budget airlines and higher ticket prices.

The ministry intends to complete these changes by 2012-2013, through a EUR1 million investment. By next summer, the airport will be reorganized: most flights will be low-capacity, around eight-ten seats, and business traffic will account for at least 80%. There will also be terminals dedicated to general aviation and VIP flights.

The Baneasa Airport's transformation requires developing its airport infrastructure (terminal, heliport, platforms), its adjacent infrastructure (control tower, hangars, maintenance and refueling areas) and its access infrastructure (subway station and parking).

Transport Minister Anca Boagiu said the price of a low-cost ticket should not increase by more than EUR4.5 as a result of the move to Otopeni.
