Bucharest City Hall Candidate Wants Main Train Station Relocated
Romanian National Initiative Party head Cozmin Gusa said Bucharest’s main train station Gara de Nord should be moved to Bucharest outskirt commune Chitila and the Cotroceni train station should be torn down, since this would free some space for dwellings and would ease traffic in northern Bucharest

"The advantages seem many. We would solve many problems regarding the environment, the dwellings crisis, and transport problems if we move Gara de Nord outside the city," Gusa said.
He sent the proposition, through an official address, to prime minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu, transport minister Ludovic Orban, public works minister Laszlo Borbely as well as Bucharest general mayor Adriean Videanu.
Gusa also proposed the dismantling of the railway line between Cotroceni and northwestern Bucharest commune Chiajna, as well as the demolishing of the Cotroceni train station.
According to calculations presented by Gusa, this would free some 200 hectares, which would allow the construction of at least 70,000 dwellings, while the capital needs some 135,000 new dwellings.
"Gara de Nord, as building, could remain the CFR Museum. The building, which is very beautiful, can be renovated, but without the railway lines," Gusa added.
