Romanian state-run power grid operator Transelectrica (TEL.RO) has authorized Iberdrola to connect its output to the country’s electricity grid, the Spanish company said in a statement.
Iberdrola’s Dobrogea project, set to include 50 windfarms to be built between 2011 and 2017, is estimated to generate energy for nearly one million households in Romania.
The Spanish company opened its first office in Bucharest last year. The company operates in Romania with its partner Eolica Dobrogea.
In addition to its Dobrogea project, Iberdrola is one of companies Romania selected to build the reactors 3 and 4 at the country’s sole nuclear power plant in Cernavoda. The two nukes will have installed power of 720 MW each.
According to Transelectrica estimates, Romania will host wind turbines with a total power of 3,000 MW by 2017, double from the 1,500 MW predicted for 2012.
Currently, Romania’s wind power is at only 11 MW.
