Bucharest Court Of Appeals Rules Conservative Voiculescu Secret Police Collaborator

Voiculescu may appeal the ruling at the High Court of Justice.

Voiculescu said in a news release he was surprised by the court's decision and is confident the High Court of Justice will rule in favor of his appeal. The politician said again he was never an informant of the former secret police and said the court ruling was politically biased.

Voiculescu's cousin Paraschiva Silaghi testified against him after she discovered he gave the Securitate information regarding her family.

Voiculescu said last week, during a final trial of his case, he only wrote informative notes required by the institution he was working in, adding that in these notes he was asked to state whether he had relatives abroad.

On June 19, 2009, the Bucharest Court of Appeals ruled Silaghi and her husband were allowed to testify against Voiculescu, who denied collaboration with the communist secret police, after they discovered in the National Council Investigating Security Files' archive notes showing Voiculescu provided information regarding their fleeing Romania.

Silaghi's sister, Mikaela Kallbery, also submitted a request to testify against Voiculescu and her address was sustained by the Court of Appeals. Kallbery claimed Voiculescu is responsible for her parents being arrested by the former regime.

In August 2006, the National Council Investigating Security Files said Dan Voiculescu collaborated with the secret police (Securitate) under the name "Felix". Voiculescu denied any wrongdoing and challenged the CNSAS decision with the Court of Appeals.
