On April 10, one of Becali’s lawyers, Gheorghita Mateut, filed a request for the temporary release of his client.

On April 7, the Bucharest court decided to keep Becali and his bodyguards, Catalin Zmarandescu, Stefan Dediu, Nicolae Dumitrascu and Dumitru Beciu, in custody after it previously ruled to place them under arrest on kidnapping charges.

Becali, chairman and financer of Steaua Bucharest football club, was arrested for 29 days on Friday, April 3, along four of his bodyguards for kidnapping three alleged car thieves.

A fifth defendant in the case, Marius Petrinel Geavela, will be investigated at large and is banned from leaving the country.
