Bucharest General Mayor Has “Short” Ruling Plan If Elected President

Oprescu pledged he will restore order in the relation between state institutions in a month, if he is elected president, adding he has a "short" ruling plan.

Oprescu said Romanians must be told the truth and they have to contribute to the country's overcoming the economic crisis, adding he wants a technocratic government if elected president.

Oprescu criticized acting President Traian Basescu for having allowed the "economic and financial mafia structures decide Romania's fate", adding the head of state is the "top of this unjust system".

Oprescu said Romania risks to go back to a "dictatorial system", 20 years after the anti-communist Revolution.

Bucharest general mayor Sorin Oprescu Monday announced he will run for president in the election set for November 22.

Oprescu said in his speech that "20 years of lying transition, that came after 45 years of communism, end here, today". He said Romanian society is divided and the country is in a poor state because its politicians have failed.

Oprescu criticized political parties saying they live in their own world and defend no one's interests but their own.

"Parties don't belong in the presidency, or the justice sector, or in business, or healthcare, or education. That's where professionals belong," Oprescu said, adding he has decided to run for president.

A long-time member of the Social Democratic Party, Oprescu left the party last year to run independently for general mayor of capital Bucharest.
