Bucharest Interim Prefect Takes Oath
The interim prefect of Romania’s capital city Bucharest, Ion Tincu, took the oath Thursday after the government dismissed the former prefect, Catalin Deaconescu, the day before.
11 viewsDeaconescu was appointed governmental inspector, while Tincu, deputy manager of the Interior Ministry’s control body, was appointed interim prefect until a contest is organized to fill the position, Interior Ministry state secretary Victor Paul Dobre told MEDIAFAX.
The government dismissed Deaconescu Wednesday. Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu said the grounds for the dismissal were strictly related to the activity of the prefect’s office during local elections and denied speculations that the decision was political.
Deaconescu said he is seriously considering suing the government and claim moral damages of 1 leu (EUR1=RON3.6629). He said the “principle of mobility”, which is likely cited in the government decision dismissing him, is an illegal reason for his dismissal, as the principle entails he was to fill the position for one year.
Deaconescu was promoted Bucharest prefect in August last year, when the government dismissed Mioara Mantale from the position.
Deaconescu is known as a close acquaintance of the transport minister, liberal Ludovic Orban, who is also head of the Liberal Party’s Bucharest branch. Orban had a dispute Monday with Liberal Party leader, Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu, who said leaders of party branches that scored less than 15% in local polls should resign.
Liberal sources said the reason behind the dismissal is Deaconescu’s announced plan to sue the Official Gazette for 33,072 voting ballots found missing, after the counting of the forms, from the 1,973,506 forms ordered in the capital city’s six districts.
