Bucharest Pulmonology Institute Faces Nosocomial Infection Crisis

Admissions to the institute’s Intensive Care Unit have been restricted, while the Bucharest Public Health Directorate launched an investigation into the matter.
Institute manager Beatrice Mahler told MEDIAFAX that both victims were suffering from serious medical conditions, and one of them was transferred from a different hospital.
“One of the patients was transferred from another hospital, and the other case was admitted to Marius Nasta. Both patients had extremely severe associated affections; one of them was admitted for bronchopneumonia alongside cardiac problems, while the other had a massive lung abscess (…) Conditions which could have provoked death by themselves, without the need for an infection,” the manager said.
Mahler added that the two were diagnosed with multi-resistant acinetobacter, which prompted her to request assistance from the Public Health Directorate.
Three other infected patients are still currently hospitalized at the institute’s ICU, of which two are in serious condition and intubated. The third patient is in good condition and due to be transferred to the institute’s Medical Ward.
The manager announced that the ICU will remain under epidemiologic surveillance until the bacteria is eradicated.
