Bucharest Social Democrat Sector 2 Mayor Backs Basescu For Reelection

Ontanu is the executive president of the Social Democratic Party's Bucharest organization and was elected mayor of Bucharest's sector 2 in the first round of local elections last year.

People in the social Democratic Party told MEDIAFAX the Bucharest organization will meet as soon as possible to elect a new executive president.

Ontanu left the Social Democratic Party in March 2006 citing disputes within the party but returned in 2007, when he was also elected executive president of the Bucharest branch. Ontanu has often been regarded as close to the Democratic Liberal Party, which backs Basescu, particularly because he praised Bucharest's former general mayor, democrat liberal Adriean Videanu.

Social democrats back party leader Mircea Geoana in the presidential election due on November 22 and Geoana said recently that all social democrats endorsing Basescu would be ousted from the party.

Social democrats recently ousted Constantin Simirad, head of the county council in Iasi, eastern Romania, after he said he will back Basescu for reelection.
